Whenever a page on your site does not load, an error message will be shown to the site visitor. As there are different errors, there are different pages that'll show up, but what is standard for all of them is that they are generic and almost certainly will have absolutely nothing in common with the layout of your website, which could be frustrating for any visitor. That is the main reason why website hosting service providers have introduced a feature known as Custom Error Pages. For a wide variety of different errors, site visitors will see your custom made content, which can be informative or amusing, based on your choice, and which will match the overall design of your Internet site, so the pages will not look like they are not part of your Internet site at all. You could use this option for a number of errors - 400 (Bad request), 401 (Unauthorized), 403 (Forbidden) and 404 (File not Found).
Custom Error Pages in Web Hosting
When you order a Linux web hosting package from our company, you shall be able to set custom error pages for your Internet sites easily, as this function is part of all our packages. The moment you've created the files and uploaded them to your web hosting account, you can check out the Hosted Domains section of your Hepsia CP and click on the Edit button for the selected domain or subdomain. Inside the pop-up which will show up, you shall see drop-down menus for all 4 types of errors and for each one of them you could choose an Apache default page, a generic page from our system or a tailor-made page. If you pick the third option, you should only type the URL to the file that you have uploaded and save the change. One other way to set customized error pages is to set up an .htaccess file inside the domain or subdomain folder and to include a couple of lines of program code in it. If you do not have prior experience or if you're just not sure how to do this, you may just copy/paste the code from our Knowledge Base article on that subject.
Custom Error Pages in Semi-dedicated Hosting
When you host your sites in a semi-dedicated server account from us, you'll be able to set custom error pages for each of them easily via our in-house created Hepsia hosting Control Panel. With just a couple of clicks inside the Hosted Domains section, you'll be able to change the default setting from a system page to a custom made one for any of the four error types. All you need to do is supply a link to every file which you have uploaded before that and then save the change. If needed, you will be able to revert this change at any time and in exactly the same way. If you'd like, you can use an .htaccess file too. It should be created/uploaded inside the domain or subdomain folder associated with the site whose error pages you intend to alter and the content for such a file can be found in our Help article on this matter.
